Switzerland spent CHF 11.4 billion on environmental protection in 2016

Neuchâtel, 26 April 2018 (FSO) – In 2016, 11.4 billion francs were spent on the environment, equivalent to 1.7% of gross domestic product (GDP). Since 2008, environmental expenditure has increased by 5%. Two thirds were spent on wastewater and waste management. Overall, expenditure in these two areas decreased by 5%, while it increased by 34% in the other environmental sectors. These initial estimates are based on the environmental accounts compiled by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

From a technical point of view, national environmental protection expenditures correspond to the financial costs of avoiding, reducing or eliminating pollution or other environmental damage. In 2016, households contributed 2.4 billion francs, businesses 5.2 billion francs and public authorities 3.8 billion francs.

Two-thirds for wastewater and waste management

Between 2008 and 2016, national environmental protection expenditures at current prices grew by 5%. They rose from 10.8 to 11.4 billion Swiss francs, accounting for 1.8% and 1.7% of GDP, respectively. In 2016, waste management expenditures amounted to 5 billion Swiss francs (-7% compared to 2008) and those for the wastewater sector to 2.8 billion Swiss francs (-1%). Taken together, spending in these two areas fell by 5%.

Conversely, spending by other sectors increased by 34%. In 2016, 1.2 billion Swiss francs (+ 67% compared to 2008) were paid for soil and water conservation, 0.6 billion Swiss francs for species and landscape conservation (+ 73%) and 0.4 million Swiss francs for air pollution control and climate protection ( + 5%).

0.7% of household expenditure on environmental protection

Between 2008 and 2016, household environmental protection expenditures grew 24% to 2.4 billion Swiss francs, equivalent to 0.7% of their final consumption. This amount includes in particular the municipal fees for wastewater and waste management as well as the additional costs for the purchase of organic food.

In the period under review, public administration expenditure on environmental protection increased by 3%. In 2016, they amounted to 2.4 billion Swiss francs, which is 2.6% of their consumer spending.

5% of public administration investment in environmental protection

In 2016, investment in environmental protection amounted to 2.2 billion Swiss francs. Compared to 2008, they increased by 2%. Public administrations invested 1.2 billion francs, which is 5% of their total investment (2008: 5.8%). The investments of the enterprises in the environmental protection amounted to 1 billion francs, i. 0.9% of total investment (2008: 1%).
