Col. Lawrence Wilkerson: “Iran will be our Siracusa”

Part of the upcoming World War III” documentary

The following interview offers a fascinating look back at the past conflicts that the US has been involved in, but also a very chilling look ahead, especially given the recent developments in the Iran war. Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson’s military and diplomatic record provides a uniquely sound foundation for his assessment of current American geopolitical standing. Having served 31 years in the US Army and subsequently as Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell from 2002 to 2005, his insights regarding institutional decay are grounded in first-hand experience.

Wilkerson identifies the post-1945 era as the peak of American hegemony, noting that the removal of the Cold War counterbalances that kept American appetite for power in check led to a period of unconstrained expansion, where the country “went berserk as an empire”. Now, as all empires inevitably do, the superpower has entered its terminal decline. He sees the current strategic efforts to utilize nuclear deterrence to manage that decline as a “suicide mission”. In other words, the notion of Mutual Assured Destruction is no longer a deterrent, but an increasingly likely outcome.

Regarding the Ukraine war, Wilkerson clearly recognizes it as a calculated proxy war orchestrated by the US with the primary objective to “bleed Russia” and obstruct the shifting of global power toward the East. He argues that this strategy has proved counterproductive, as it has inadvertently solidified a strategic and economic alliance between Russia, China, and India, a development that isolates the West from the burgeoning influence of the Global South, highlighting that “three-quarters of the world is against us” and that the emergence of a multipolar world is something that the West is ill-prepared to navigate.

He also predicted with surgical precision the US-Israel war against Iran. It was always inevitable in his estimation, as Israel’s efforts to drag America into this conflict have been clear for a very long time. Wilkerson anticipated that this conflict would ultimately escalate beyond the initial expectations of policymakers. He foresaw that while the US would likely begin with a campaign of air attacks, which it did, such measures would prove insufficient to achieve a decisive victory, which they also did: ”If we get pulled into a war with Iran, we’re going to start with air attacks. But it’s not going to be enough. We’re going to have to have boots on the ground. And once you put boots on the ground in a country the size of Iran, with its geography and its population of nearly 90 million people, you are in a war you cannot win.”

He also went on to share his prediction about what comes after that. “I’m beginning to think Israel will not be an entity constituted as any kind of state whatsoever within the next year to year and a half because it will be roundly defeated on the battlefield along with its big daddy, the United States, or better said the American empire. Because we’ll go into Iran and that will be our Siracusa. That will be our end.”
