Overnight Stays Increased by 3.8 percent in the First Half of 2018

Neuchâtel, 6 August 2018 (FSO) – The hotel sector registered 18.4 million overnight stays in Switzerland in the first half of 2018, representing an increase of 3.8% (+670,000 overnight stays) compared with the same period a year earlier. With a total of 10.0 million overnight stays, foreign demand rose by 4.6% (+444,000). Domestic visitors registered 8.3 million overnight stays, i.e. an increase of 2.8% (+226,000). These are the provisional results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

 

Rising demand from home and abroad

Domestic demand reached a total of 8.3 million overnight stays during the first half of 2018. This represents an increase of + 2.8% (+226 000) compared to the same period of the previous year. Foreign guests generated 10.0 million overnight stays, an increase of 444,000 (+ 4.6%) compared to the first half of 2017. This increase is primarily attributable to European guests earning 224,000 additional units (+3.8%) %). With an increase of 73,000 overnight stays (+ 3.9%), Germany registered the clearest absolute growth of all foreign countries of origin. This is followed by the United Kingdom (+27 000 / + 3.3%) and France (+24 000 / + 4.0%). Spain also recorded an increase (+15 000 / + 7.9%). By contrast, Austria registered the strongest absolute decline of all countries of origin with a minus of 6800 overnight stays (-3.7%).

Demand from the Asian continent increased by 143,000 overnight stays (+ 6.6%). The increase was most pronounced among guests from India with 42,000 additional overnight stays (+ 10.0%), followed by those from China (excluding Hong Kong) with 30,000 overnight stays (+ 5.5%) and the Gulf States (+21 000 / + 9.0%). In contrast, Japan recorded a decline of 3200 units (-2.2%).

Demand on the American continent increased by 67,000 overnight stays (+ 5.3%). Growth was highest in the United States with 48,000 units (+ 5.2%).

Guests from Oceania recorded an increase of 7700 overnight stays (+ 4.9%), those from Africa an increase of 1800 overnight stays (+ 1.4%).

Overnight stays in almost all tourism regions in the first half of the year

Twelve of the 13 tourist regions recorded more overnight stays in the first half of 2018 than in the same period of the previous year. Zurich Region recorded the largest absolute increase with an increase of 171 000 overnight stays (+ 6.2%), followed by Grisons (+135 000 / + 5.4%), Valais (+112 000 / + 5.6%) , Bern Region (+103 000 / + 4.4%) and Lucerne / Lake Lucerne (+ 92 000 / + 5.5%). In contrast, Ticino recorded a decline of 69,000 overnight stays (-6.9%).
