A group of prominent French cryptocurrency entrepreneurs and their families will receive heightened security measures following two confirmed kidnappings and an attempted abduction involving industry figures and their relatives.
The French Interior Ministry announced that the new measures include priority access to the police emergency line, home visits, and safety briefings by law enforcement to advise on best practices. Officers will also undergo training focused on anti-crypto asset laundering.
“These repeated kidnappings of professionals in the crypto sector will be fought with specific tools, both immediate and short-term, to prevent, dissuade and hinder in order to protect the industry,”
Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau said in a statement on Friday (May 16).
Retailleau met with leaders from France’s cryptocurrency sector earlier that day following a spate of violent incidents.
The most recent occurred on Tuesday (May 13), when four individuals attempted to abduct the daughter and grandson of the CEO of French crypto platform Paymium in broad daylight.
Earlier this year, David Balland, co-founder of crypto wallet company Ledger, was kidnapped, and earlier this month, the father of another crypto entrepreneur was taken.
The investigations are being led by France’s organised crime prosecutor, with several arrests already made. Retailleau stated earlier in the week that he believed the incidents were likely connected.

Crypto VC Funding Remains Steady at US$10B in 2024

PitchBook has released its Q4 2024 Crypto VC Trends Report, providing an overview of venture capital investment in the cryptocurrency sector.
The report highlights key trends across blockchain infrastructure, Web3, decentralised finance (DeFi), and AI-driven decentralised systems.
Crypto venture funding saw a modest recovery in the fourth quarter, increasing by 13.6% compared to the previous quarter.
Deal value rose from US$2.2 billion in Q3 to US$2.5 billion in Q4.
However, the number of deals continued to decline, falling from 411 to 351, a 14.6% drop.
For the full year, total crypto VC investment reached US$10 billion across 1,940 deals, close to the US$10.3 billion recorded in 2023.

PostFinance Launches Staking Service for Ethereum

PostFinance has partnered with Sygnum, a FINMA-regulated digital asset bank, to offer cryptocurrency trading and custody services.
The new offering includes a “staking” feature, initially available for Ethereum through the PostFinance App and e-finance.
Other cryptocurrencies will be added in the future.
“Staking” involves locking up cryptocurrencies to support blockchain security and operations, earning “staking rewards” as passive income.

Sygnum, a global digital asset banking group, has secured US$ 58 million in an oversubscribed funding round, earning it unicorn status with a valuation to over US$ 1 billion.
The round bolstered Sygnum’s balance sheet and CET1 capital, supporting plans for future growth.
Led by Bitcoin-focused venture capital firm Fulgur Ventures, the round saw participation from new and existing investors, along with Sygnum’s co-founders, board, and team members, who continue to hold a majority ownership in the company.
