31.07.2020 – Turnover adjusted for sales days and holidays rose in the retail sector by 0.4% in nominal terms in June 2020 compared with the previous year. Seasonally adjusted, nominal turnover fell by 3.6% compared with the previous month. These are provisional findings from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Real turnover adjusted for sales days and holidays rose in the retail sector by 1.1% in June 2020 compared with the previous year. Real growth takes inflation into consideration. Compared with the previous month, real, seasonally adjusted retail trade turnover registered a decline of 3.8%.
Sectors continue to show varying trends Adjusted for sales days and holidays, the retail sector excluding service stations showed a 2.4% increase in nominal turnover in June 2020 compared with June 2019 (in real terms +2.9%). Service stations continued to lose turnover with nominal losses of –22.2% (-7.3% in real terms). Retail sales of food, drinks and tobacco registered an increase in nominal turnover of 6.8% (in real terms +5.7%), whereas the non-food sector registered a nominal negative of 1.4% (in real terms +0.1%). The sectors “other household equipment, textiles, DIY and furniture” (+17.6%, in real terms +19.7%), “information and communication equipment” (+33.6%, in real terms + 43.8%) and “market stalls, retail sale via mail order houses or via internet” (+12.7%, in real terms + 13.8%) maintained their high turnover increases. Turnover in the sectors “other goods (clothing, chemists, watches and jewellery)” (–12.3%; in real terms –11.7%) fell again, although with the smallest minus since March. |

Excluding service stations, the retail sector showed a seasonally adjusted decline in nominal turnover of 4.2% compared with the previous month (in real terms –4.4%). Retail sales of food, drinks and tobacco registered a nominal minus of 9.5% (in real terms –10.1%). The non-food sector showed a plus of 2.3% (in real terms +2.4%).
