The city is about to embark on a decade of social change. And two budding architects, a married couple named Alison and Peter Smithson are about to land the commission of their careers.

Half a century since its construction, this trilogy of brutalist blocks still stands out amongst the low-rise buildings of London’s St James’s. It’s the Smithsons most celebrated set of buildings and home to The Economist, one of Britain’s oldest newspapers.

It’s from the top four floors of the plaza’s tower that The Economist produces its editorial content. And despite the passage of more than 50 years, its interior remains largely unchanged.
