How did a group of school children help to change the law on racial discrimination? In 1963, Martin Luther King brought his fight against segregation to Birmingham, Alabama. But after many protesters were arrested and jailed, momentum faltered. By April, few responded to his call to march.

On May 2nd 1963, hundreds of children skipped school to march peacefully to City Hall, some as young as six-years-old.

On June 11th, citing Birmingham, President Kennedy announced his intention to introduce a new civil rights law. In 1964, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, outlawing discrimination based on colour.
