In December last year, the Observatoire statistique transfrontalier published unemployment figures for the French region surrounding Geneva.

French unemployment calculations follow the method used by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), which include all job seekers, according to Tribune de Genève.

Official Swiss numbers only include those registered as unemployed, which is a lower percentage that excludes those who would like to work but are no longer registered. In 2018, Geneva’s official unemployment rate was 4.1%.

However, in 2018, unemployment in Geneva was 11.8% according to the ILO calculation. While in nearby France the rate was 6.9%.

According to Tribune de Genève, between 2013 and 2018, Geneva’s ILO-calculated unemployment rate rose by 1.7 percentage points from 10.1% to 11.8%. At the same time in neighbouring Genevois français the rate fell from 7.4% to 7.0%.

Unemployment in Geneva in 2018 was higher than the French average. At the end of 2018, unemployment in Metropolitan France was 8.5%, according to the same report. 3.3% lower than in Geneva.
