Switzerland Unemployment in October 2019: Up to 2.2 percent, seasonally adjusted unchanged at 2.3 percent

Unemployment registered in October 2019 – According to surveys by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), at the end of October 2019, 101’684 unemployed were registered at the regional employment agencies (RAV), 2 586 more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate rose from 2.1% in September 2019 to 2.2% in the month under review. Compared to the same month of the previous year, unemployment fell by 5,631 persons (-5.2%).

Seasonally adjusted Unemployment Rate

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is unchanged at 2.3%.

Number of unemployed and Job seekers

Youth unemployment in October 2019

Youth unemployment (15-24 year olds) decreased by 660 (-5.2%) to 11,992. Compared to the same month of the previous year, this represents a decrease of 1,072 persons (-8.2%).

Unemployed 50-64 years in October 2019

The number of unemployed 50-64 years increased by 988 people (+ 3.6%) to 28,409. Compared to the same month of the previous year, this corresponds to a decrease by 1’280 persons (-4.3%).

Job seekers in October 2019

A total of 176’495 jobseekers were registered, 5’072 more than in the previous month. Compared to the same period of the previous year, this number fell by 6,951 persons (-3.8%).

Notified vacancies in October 2019

On 1 July 2018, the obligation to register professional types with an unemployment rate of at least 8% was introduced throughout Switzerland. The number of vacancies reported to RAV decreased by 3,198 to 34,927 in October. Of the 34,927 jobs, 22,217 were subject to mandatory reporting.

Billed short-time working in August 2019

In August 2019, 964 people were affected by short-time work, 220 more people (+ 29.6%) than in the previous month. The number of affected companies increased by 14 units (+ 24.1%) to 72. The lost working hours increased by 6’137 (+ 13.7%) to 50’802 hours. In the same period of the previous year (August 2018), 16,407 lost hours had been registered, which had been distributed to 252 persons in 53 companies.

Deductions in August 2019

According to preliminary figures from unemployment insurance funds, the number of persons who had exhausted their right to unemployment compensation during the month of August 2019 amounted to 2,662 persons.
