Facebook rejects most information requests from Swiss authorities

Over the first three months of 2018 Switzerland’s authorities made 80 requests for Facebook user data, however two thirds of them were rejected, according to the newspaper SonntagsBlick as reported in 20 Minutes.

When the requests were urgent the response rate rose to two thirds of requests.

Reto Nause, responsible for security in Bern, is unhappy with the social network’s response record. Several years ago his team asked for information on user activity in relation to a protest that degenerated in the city. Facebook never responded.

Facebook has no physical presence in Switzerland. The only legal avenue for pursuing the company is to open a lengthy international judicial action against Facebook’s european subsidiary based in Ireland.

Balthasar Glättli, a parliamentarian from Zurich, is calling for rules requiring large online multinationals to have an address in Switzerland. The Federal Council is now looking at this idea.
