Switzerland Unemployment in August 2018: Unchanged at 2.4percent, seasonally adjusted unchanged at 2.6percent

 

Unemployment Rate (not seasonally adjusted)

Registered unemployment in August 2018 – According to SECO surveys, at the end of August 2018, 107,893 unemployed people were enrolled in the Regional Employment Centers (RAV), 1,841 more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate remained at 2.4% in the month under review. Compared to the same month of the previous year, unemployment fell by 27,685 people (-20.4%).

Seasonally adjusted Unemployment Rate

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is unchanged at 2.6%.

Number of unemployed and Job seekers

Youth unemployment in August 2018
Youth unemployment (aged 15-24) increased by 2’691 (+ 22.8%) to 14’498. Compared to the same month last year, this represents a decrease of 4,254 people (-22.7%).

Unemployed 50 and more in August 2018
The number of unemployed 50 and more decreased by 575 people (-1.9%) to 29,845. Compared to the same month of the previous year, this corresponds to a decrease by 5’502 persons (-15.6%).

Job seekers in August 2018
A total of 179,975 jobseekers were registered, 118 more than in the previous month. Compared with the same period of the previous year, this number fell by 15,359 (-7.9%).

Notified vacancies in August 2018
On 1 July 2018, the obligation to notify jobseekers with an unemployment rate of at least 8% was introduced throughout Switzerland. The number of vacancies reported to RAV increased by 6,406 to 36,410 in August. Of the 36’410 bodies, 21’503 were subject to mandatory reporting.

Billed short-time working in June 2018
In June 2018, 858 persons were affected by short-time working, 51 fewer persons (-5.6%) than in the previous month. The number of affected companies decreased by 4 units (-4.6%) to 83. The lost working hours decreased by 8’193 (-13.9%) to 50’539 hours. In the same period of the previous year (June 2017), 169,431 lost hours had been registered, which had been distributed among 3,351 persons in 351 companies.

Deductions in June 2018
According to preliminary figures from the unemployment insurance funds, the number of persons who had exhausted their right to unemployment benefit during the month of June 2018 amounted to 3,286 persons.
