Neuchâtel, 7 June 2018 (FSO) – The Swiss hotel industry registered 16.5 million overnight stays during the winter tourist season (November 2017 to April 2018), i.e. an increase of 4.6% (+724 000) compared with the same period of the previous year. With a total 8.7 million overnight stays, foreign demand grew by 5.6% (+460 000). Domestic demand rose by 3.5% (+264 000) reaching 7.8 million units. These are the provisional results from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
Increasing demand from the domestic as well as from all continentsIn the tourist winter season, Swiss guests generated an increase of 264,000 overnight stays (+ 3.5%) compared to the same period of the previous year. The foreign guests recorded an additional 460,000 overnight stays (+ 5.6%). This increase is mainly attributable to the European guests, with an increase of 246 000 units (+ 4.4%) largest absolute increase. Germany registered 66,000 additional overnight stays (+ 3.9%), showing the strongest absolute growth of all foreign countries of origin. It is followed by the United Kingdom (+25 000 / + 3.3%) and France (+ 21 000 / + 3.5%). In contrast, Austria recorded the largest decline of all countries of origin with a decline of 7100 overnight stays (-4.4%). The Asian guests also recorded a significant increase with 131,000 additional overnight stays (+ 8.7%). The increase was particularly high among guests from China (excluding Hong Kong, +36 000 / + 9.0%), India (+ 14 000 / + 9.2%) and the Republic of Korea (+ 12 000 / + 8.7 %). The overnight stays of the Gulf States also increased (+7400 / + 3.4%). The American continent also registered an increasing demand (+64 000 / + 6.8%). The United States generated an increase of 35,000 overnight stays (+ 5.3%). Oceania (+13 000 / + 10.8%) and Africa (+7100 / + 5.9%) showed the same development. |

Overnight stays in most tourism regionsEleven of the 13 tourist regions registered an increase in overnight stays in the tourist winter season compared to the same period of the previous year. Zurich Region recorded the largest absolute increase with an increase of 167,000 overnight stays (+ 6.8%). This was followed by Grisons (+146 000 / + 5.6%), Valais (+112000 / + 5.6%), Bern Region (+99 000 / + 5.2%) and Lucerne / Lake Lucerne (+82 000 / + 6.1%). Ticino registered the clearest absolute decline, with a decline of 61,000 overnight stays (-9.2%). |
