Switzerland Unemployment in January 2018: Unchanged at 3.3 percent, seasonally adjusted unchanged at 3.0 percent

Registered unemployment in January 2018 – According to SECO surveys, at the end of January 2018, 149,161 unemployed people were enrolled in the Regional Employment Centers (RAV), 2,507 more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate remained at 3.3% in the month under review. Compared with the same month last year, unemployment fell by 15,305 (-9.3%).

Seasonally adjusted Unemployment Rate

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is unchanged at 3.0%.

Number of unemployed and Job seekers

Youth unemployment in January 2018
Youth unemployment (15-24 year-olds) decreased by 135 (-0.8%) to 16,545. Compared to the same month of the previous year, this represents a decrease of 3,237 persons (-16.4%).

Unemployed 50 and more in January 2018
The number of unemployed 50 and more increased by 671 persons (+ 1.7%) to 39,977. Compared to the same month of the previous year, this represents a decrease of 1,956 people (-4.7%).

Job seekers in January 2018
A total of 213,125 jobseekers were registered, 1,107 more than in the previous month. Compared with the same period of the previous year, this number fell by 13,736 (-6.1%).

Notified vacancies in January 2018
The number of vacancies reported to RAV increased by 1,637 to 12,341.

Billed short-time work in November 2017
In November 2017, 1’483 people were affected by short-time working, 216 less (-12.7%) than in the previous month. The number of affected companies decreased by 14 units (-8.0%) to 162. The lost working hours decreased by 11’494 (-10.0%) to 103’185 hours. In the corresponding period of the previous year (November 2016), 338,224 lost hours had been registered, which had spread to 6,204 persons in 565 companies.

Controls in November 2017
According to preliminary figures from the unemployment insurance funds, the number of persons who had exhausted their right to unemployment compensation during the month of November 2017 amounted to 3,205 persons.
