The new aircraft will create 36 new jobs on top of the current 500 at the airline’s Geneva base, Thomas Haagensen, Easyjet’s director of northern Europe, told Le Matin Dimanche.

Last year, the airline flew 900,000 more people from Switzerland than it did in 2015.

Part of the growth is due to the progressive replacement of smaller A319 aircraft, with 156 seats, with larger A320s with 186 seats.

The new addition to Geneva’s fleet, the first in five years, will allow the airline to add new routes from Geneva, including the city of Calvi on the island of Corsica and the city of Tivat in Montenegro.

In addition, Haagensen told the newspaper that Easyjet will decide on its Brexit plans this summer, including where it intends to put its EU base. “We will need to register part of our fleet in the EU to ensure that we can provide flights within the bloc, something we might not be able to do with aircraft flying the British flag”, he said.

Over the 12 months to 30 April 2017, Easyjet sold over 76 million passenger seats. In April, the most popular destinations from Switzerland were London, Barcelona and Porto. In the same month the airline added Marseille to its list of destinations from Geneva, its 76th.

Easyjet is Geneva airport’s largest operator.
