The $5 Indian Head gold coin, also known as the Indian Head Half Eagle, was minted by the United States Mint from 1908 to 1929. These coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, Denver Mint, and San Francisco Mint and contain 0.24187 troy ounces of gold. The coin was designed by American sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, a student of legendary coin designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Pratt’s design was revolutionary for U.S. coinage because the images and lettering are incuse, meaning they are sunken into the coin’s surface rather than raised. Design inspiration: Obverse (front): The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a full feathered headdress. Pratt based the portrait on earlier Native American imagery used in American coinage and art. Many historians believe the portrait was inspired by composite features of several Native American leaders rather than a single individual, continuing the artistic tradition seen on the earlier Indian Head cent. Reverse (back): The reverse displays a standing American bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch, symbolizing both military readiness and peace. The eagle design reflects the long-standing American heraldic tradition of using the bald eagle as the national symbol of the United States, appearing on many U.S. coins throughout history. Unlike modern bullion coins, pre-1933 gold coins often carry both gold value and collectible numismatic appeal. Because these coins were minted more than a century ago—and many were melted during the gold confiscations and gold recalls of the 1930s—surviving examples are increasingly scarce.
