American Gold Buffalo Coin | U.S. Mint | Money Metals Exchange

Money Metals Exchange is happy to now offer the beautiful one-troy ounce Gold American Buffalo coin: https://www.moneymetals.com/american-buffalo-gold-coin-9999-pure-one-ounce/18?utm_source=silo&utm_medium=youtube&utm_campaign=gold-coins-for-sale

The Gold Buffalo, first minted by the United States Mint in 2006, has a gold purity of .9999 (24 karat), which is higher than the 22 karat Gold American Eagle. While the Eagle and the Buffalo each contain a full troy ounce of gold, gold Buffalo coins are slightly smaller in size because they are absent of any metal other than gold (note: the American Eagle contains small amounts of both silver and copper in addition to the one-troy ounce of gold).

Although its low mintage is no match for the more popular Eagle, the Gold American Buffalo has been strong competition for the world’s other well known .9999 purity coins – namely the widely popular Canadian Maple Leaf (https://youtu.be/YWIXgSu4W9w).

ABOUT THE DESIGN

The American Buffalo gold coin is modeled after the famous Buffalo Nickel, created by James Earle Fraser in the early 1900s.

Native American (obverse) – The obverse shows the well-known Indian Head design. Fraser said that he combined a total of three Indian chiefs to create the image. Iron Tail, Two Moons and Big Tree were the three chiefs Fraser used. Fraser was never 100% sure whether or not he actually used the three, but the coin is an absolute masterpiece nevertheless.

American Bison (reverse) – The reverse features the classic buffalo design as well as inscriptions of the gold American Buffalo coin value, weight, and gold content. The history behind the image is as intriguing as the coin itself. An American buffalo named Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo was said to be the particular animal used for the coin. Conflicting accounts suggest that a popular Bronx Zoo bison named Bronx was used.
