It’s Always Been Hamiltonian Statecraft

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard. Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.

It’s Always Been Hamiltonian Statecraft

Walter Russel Mead asserts in his new piece in Foreign Affairs that what he labels as “Jacksonian national populism” and “Jeffersonian isolationism” have made a significant comeback during the 21st century. According to him, President Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq mirrors Jacksonian populism and that Donald Trump’s victory in 2016 was a sign of the collapse of neoconservatism in the American electorate. Shockingly, he also asserted that both parties have seen restraint and free trade as being dominant. His article emphasizes the collapse of liberal globalism and the crucial importance for a return to “Hamiltonian” foreign policy. What is Hamiltonian foreign policy according to Mead?Mead’s inconsistent, utopian opinion is that Hamilton’s focus was essentially neo-colonialist and mercantilist

The US Is as Close as Ever to Saudi Arabia, 23 Years after 9-11

The legacy of 9-11 is full of misinformation and misguided policy initiatives. Rather than taking seriously the motives of the hijackers and their supporters, American politicians went head first into creating a massive surveillance state and growing the American presence overseas. What is worse is that not all of the masterminds are identified by Washington. While we know firmly that actors with connection to the Saudi General Intelligence Presidency (GIP) were at least aware of the incoming attacks on 9-11, politicians in Washington have rarely attempted to hold the Saudis responsible, and have been quick to strengthen ties between the Gulf monarchy and the United States. Osama bin Laden, in his Letter to the American people, laid out the reasons behind 9-11 and other instances of terror

Diego Garcia and Cocos Islands: Another Example of US Imperialism

The United States is continuing its practice of insisting dominance in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Washington maintains a large military base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, and is now beginning to examine the Cocos Islands’ strategic value. American action increased significantly in the region after the British left Mauritius in 1968. At that point, the British decided to hang on to the Chagos Islands, incorporating them into the current British Indian Ocean Territory. An atoll in this island grouping is Diego Garcia, which would become the site of one of America’s largest military and intelligence bases in the world.During the Cold War, the United States was constantly searching for ways to properly combat Soviet influence. Diego Garcia was chosen because it held a very small

Fewer Americans Are Willing to Fight and Die for Other Countries

A July poll shows that a majority of the American public does not support sending U.S. troops to defend Taiwan or Ukraine, sentiment that lines up with findings from other recent surveys on these heated subjects, which suggests that Americans appear to be warming to restraint and non-interventionism in international affairs.Indeed, another poll, conducted by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in February found that a majority of Americans (56%) do not believe that the United States should pick a side in Israel’s war on Gaza. And a more recent survey from Council this month found that just four in ten support the United States sending troops to defend Israel if attacked by its neighbors.Similarly, Americans’ suspicions of foreign intervention were uncovered in a recent YouGov poll, which

Is the European Union headed for another debt crisis?

Europe has had trouble balancing its relatively large number of spending commitments with lackluster economic growth. The European economy remained basically stagnant in 2023, compared to 2.5% growth in the United States. Economic subsidies, a large welfare state, and a new push to increase defense spending means that all but four EU members are left with budget deficits in 2023. While having a deficit is not abnormal amongst developed countries, the number of members with a deficit above 3% is troubling and may require action on the part of the European Commission. As of the last report, 11 states violated EU member state rules by having budget deficits above 3%. EU members must ultimately decide if deficits are a necessary evil or if some spending commitments must be decreased.Part of

Trump and Biden can’t wait to send more assistance to Ukraine

Trump and Biden cannot wait to send more assistance to UkraineThe most recent presidential debate allowed American voters to compare the policies and rhetoric of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. There was a lot of posturing and insulting, but below it all were comments on foreign policy which must be addressed. With roughly two and a half years of large-scale fighting between Russia and Ukraine, increasing tension between Taiwan and mainland China, and a conflict between Israel and its Palestinian neighbors which seems to be never-ending, foreign policy should be of paramount importance to the American electorate. The United States has not awakened to the reality of a multipolar world; neither have many of its allies. Rather than funding their own defense, Israel,

Natural rights and the American border

The American immigration system is far from easily navigable. Those who proudly declare that they are “all for immigration as long as it is legal” may be unfamiliar with how convoluted the immigration system is. The described “crisis” usually relates largely to how many immigrants there are in legal limbo. These immigrants in limbo are mostly those who are legally seeking immigration or acceptance as a refugee but are turned away without reason. Many wait in the U.S. not because they are unwilling to follow legal steps but because the legal steps are either extremely lengthy or unpredictable.
These immigrants waiting, of course, are sometimes placed in camps, where there are numerous accounts of human rights abuses. It is not just immigrants who are having their rights violated because of

Warmongers Win in The French Legislative Election while Everyone Else Loses

After the recent election in France, the mainstream media is jubilant at the defeat of the far-right coalition. Polls up until election day predicted a likely win for the right-wing National Rally and its allies. This was not the case. While the National Rally won the most vote share, due to strategic voting and election runoffs, the right-wing coalition won third place in the National Assembly. Macron’s centrist coalition, Ensemble, won second place, with the leftist New Popular Front wining first place. Divisions in the assembly may be too wide to allow the leftist parties to push forward their most radical policies, but it is certainly a win for leftists who are hoping to overturn Macron’s feeble attempts at economic austerity. What of the National Rally? We are told everywhere that this

Biden and Trump Prove That They Still Don’t Understand the Economy

The American people have the great pleasure of electing either Joe Biden or Donald Trump as president this year. With the election approaching, formal debates between the candidates have begun. A lot has been said about President Biden’s shaky performance or former President Trump’s comments on the 2020 election, but their comments on the economy or trade have seen less attention. Both presidents spent trillions on government programs, increased the national debt, and participated in protectionist trade policies. They tried to outdo each other in the debate, arguing about who was the most protectionist or who participated in the most price fixing. Looking past their performances and further into their comments on the economy is necessary.Early in the debate Biden mentioned supporting rent

Public Schools Pushing Moral Standards Isn’t New

Last month the governor of Louisiana signed several pieces of legislation related to education. The most controversial bill is LA HB71. This law requires all public K-12 schools in Louisiana to accept any monetary donations towards or displays of the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, the Northwest Ordinance, and the Ten Commandments. The media is running wild with this story, as if this is the first time that public schools are being required to push moral principles onto students. While the constitution does restrict the establishment of a state church and ensures high levels of societal religious freedom, it is logically impossible for a school to operate outside of a value system. Additionally, this piece of legislation references previous Supreme Court Cases which

With the Assange Guilty Plea, the US Government Further Destroys the Rule of Law

A long battle surrounding Julian Assange has finally come to an end. Founder of divisive group, Wikileaks, Julian would gain popularity in 2010 when helping former US soldier, Chelsea Manning uncover and spread evidence that the United States and Australia committed war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Julian would also be charged with sexual assault by Sweden in 2010, a charge which would be disputed and later dropped. In 2012, following this charge, Assange fled Sweden and sought asylum in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian authorities gave Assange up to the United Kingdom in 2019 where he had been in prison since. Throughout 2019 and 2020 the United States would indict Assange on multiple charges ranging from conspiracy to commit computer intrusion, violating the Espionage Act, and conspiring with

Has Interventionism Jeopardized America’s Future?

President George Washington famously warned against entangling alliances in his farewell address to Congress. However, now more than ever, it seems that escalations across the globe are tempting the United States to become increasingly involved in other countries’ dilemmas. American citizens and legislators must remember part of what made the American experiment so unique and resist those temptations. Here’s why.The US defense budget is unjustifiable. In 2021, American defense spending totaled $801 billion—larger than the next nine countries combined. The Department of Defense (DOD) was recently given an increased budget of $858 billion, and to make matters worse, that money is being used inefficiently: the DOD recently failed its fifth consecutive audit, with about half of its assets

Unsuccessful DEI Efforts Meet Legislative Opposition in Tennessee

The Tennessee Board of Regents (TBOR) promoted an initiative in 2023 which was meant to better ensure that black males in the state have greater access to higher education, and the support needed to graduate in higher numbers. TBOR referenced a graduation rate which is at least 20 percent lower than the graduation rate of other students. A plan to fight this undesirable metric was implemented by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) in part through the Black Male Success Initiative (BMSI).Assumedly some members of the commission supported this plan out of good intentions, more specifically, a desire to use the state to benefit the marginalized. Unfortunately, this is not the whole picture. In 2015, the TBOR implemented a 10 year strategic plan, which as of now has been less than

Why Does America Have a Lack of Libertarian Representation?

Those unfamiliar with American electoral politics may be puzzled by America’s presidential elections. Recently, it seems as though most elections result in two largely unpopular candidates winning their party’s nomination, but no viable third option emerges. While the United States does allow candidates to run as independents or under third-party banners, these candidates rarely make an impact at the national level. The reasons for this are largely found in the Constitution, but other reasons exist as well. For example, the Electoral College has made it difficult for some voters to vote for a candidate who has no shot of winning their state’s Electoral College votes. The US is unique in that voters do not vote for their desired party or candidate but for a certain slate of electors who are

How Economic Realities Can Curb Activist Politicians

Advocates for increased levels of societal safety nets seem to primarily ignore obvious truths of public choice theory, as well as what economic trends have taught humanity for hundreds of years. Adam Smith famously said:It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. We address ourselves, not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages. This obvious truth is assumed by economists but misunderstood by those who advocate against so-called price gouging or for “free” healthcare or childcare for individuals and families. A basic grasp of economic realities and how they relate to human nature easily restricts these attempts to

Somaliland Needs Self-Determination

Created in 1960, the United Nations–recognized state of Somalia is by almost all accounts a failed state. Yet it continues to assert dominance over regions that are seeking further autonomy or independence. The UN has listed self-determination as a human right, but the global neighborhood rarely sees this human right respected or enforced by the UN. This is likely because of how slow-moving the UN can be and because the nations that make up the UN have conflicting national interests. A United Nations that is slow to act has led to de facto independence or autonomy in some regions, with international recognition sometimes coming later. This is seen in the two northern regions of Somalia. The modern state of Somalia was not created through mutual agreement or due to a similar culture in the

The TikTok Ban Is the Next Patriot Act

HR 7521, called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, is a recent development in American politics. TikTok has been in the news for the past few years, after the public became aware of its connections to China. The popular social media mobile app is currently owned by ByteDance Ltd, a Chinese company. China and the United States currently have a rocky relationship, leading to fears that the Chinese government could potentially use this app to spy on American citizens. Several states and counties voted to restrict the usage of the app in some ways, mostly disallowing government employees from using it on government-owned phones. Earlier this month, the United States Congress passed a piece of legislation that would restrict the app’s availability if

Texas Governor Abbott Doesn’t Understand the First Amendment

On the 27th of March, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed an executive order which had the purpose of curbing speech deemed as “anti-semitic” on all state-run universities. Unfortunately, speech protection on public universities has been shaky in the past with universities attempting to restrict speech many times with varying levels of success. Supreme Court decision Healey v James 1972 states that “Among the rights protected by the First Amendment is the right of individuals to associate to further their personal beliefs. While the freedom of association is not explicitly set out in the Amendment, it has been held to be implicit in the freedoms of speech, assembly, and petition.” There is a long precedent of courts protecting speech, even what is considered hate speech in the United States.

Does Libertarianism Reject Communities? Libertarianism Actually Strengthens Them

Many opponents of libertarianism claim to reject its philosophy because of its extreme individualist tendencies or because they believe it encourages selfishness. While there are libertarians who are individualistic in every sense of the word, libertarianism does not naturally reject community. Additionally, libertarianism does not encourage selfishness but recognizes that most humans are selfish and thus are wary of giving humans too much power. The term “individualism” also needs further clarification. The individualist is not explicitly antialtruism or anticommunity, but the political individualist recognizes individual rights over any supposed communal responsibilities. On the surface, some may think that libertarians only care about personal freedom. Most libertarians do pursue

Social Security and the Decline of the Employer Pension System

The Social Security Act is considered the first federal social welfare program in American history, being signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1935. American government pensions have existed for government employees and veterans since the Civil War, and private pension systems even longer. There was not great support for a public pension system in the US, as voluntary association and self-sufficiency was the standard. An example of this is the fact that nearly 90 percent of people over sixty-five in New York were not reliant on any sort of organized private, or public assistance programs prior to 1935.Some assume that the Great Depression would automatically lead to an absolute devastation of the private pension system. Fortunately, this was not the case. More than 85 percent
