If you’re a silver stacker, you need American Silver Eagles.

In this video, we show the key difference between Type 1 vs Type 2 American Silver Eagle bullion coins, the upgraded security details added in 2021, and a quick way to avoid one of the most common Silver Eagle “mint mark” misunderstandings.

Type 1 vs Type 2 (what changed)

• Type 1 (1986–mid 2021): Reverse (tails) features the heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti

• Type 2 (mid 2021–present): Reverse (tails) features the eagle landing design by Emily Damstra, sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso

• Obverse (both types): “Walking Liberty” by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman (details strengthened on the 2021 refresh)

IMPORTANT: Bullion Silver Eagles (not Proof / numismatic versions)

This video is about bullion American Silver Eagles—the investment-grade coins made for stacking. Bullion ASEs typically have no mint mark on the coin. Proof/collector versions are separate products with different finishes, packaging, and pricing, and they often include mint marks (like W for West Point).

Don’t confuse the “AW” with a West Point “W”

A lot of people spot the small mark on the obverse and assume it’s a West Point “W” (and therefore a proof/collector coin).
It’s not a mint mark. It’s the artist’s initials: “AW” for Adolph A. Weinman.

Coin highlights (American Silver Eagle bullion)

• Silver content / purity: 1.000 troy oz of .999 fine silver

• Diameter: 40.60 mm (1.598 in)

• Thickness: ~2.98 mm

• Edge: Reeded

• Legal tender face value: $1 (ONE DOLLAR)

• Issuer: United States Mint (official U.S. silver bullion coin program)

• Security features (Type 2 era)

Starting in mid-2021, the U.S. Mint added enhanced anti-counterfeiting elements, including:

• Reeded edge variation (“edge notch”) — a visible “missing reed” interruption on the edge

• Notch location changes every year (the Mint historically does not make a big pre-announcement about the exact placement)

• Additional security enhancements associated with the 2021 redesign (beyond the visible notch)

Edge notch locations by year (viewed from the obverse):

• 2021: ~6 o’clock

• 2022: ~7 o’clock

• 2023: ~3 o’clock

• 2024: ~9 o’clock

• 2025: ~10 o’clock (left and just below the “I” in LIBERTY - Correction from video)
