Standing outside the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) building in Washington, D.C. (600 Pennsylvania Avenue, North West) Money Metals’ Mike Maharrey breaks down why so much of what happens inside that agency has no basis in the original Constitution.

In this short on-the-ground video, Mike explains how the word “trade” meant something very different in the Founding era than it does today. When the Constitution granted Congress the power to “regulate commerce,” it referred narrowly to the movement of goods from place to place — not every form of economic life, and certainly not a blank check for federal bureaucrats.

Over time, politicians, judges, and agencies have twisted that limited power into a justification for federal control over agriculture, manufacturing, labor, worker safety, and nearly every corner of the economy. The FTC is a prime example of how far Washington has stretched the “commerce” and “trade” language beyond anything the Founders intended.

In this video, Mike highlights:

✅ What “trade” meant in the constitutional era

✅ How the federal commerce power was supposed to be limited

✅ Why agencies like the Federal Trade Commission represent constitutional overreach

✅ How redefining words lets the federal government expand its power

✅ Why this matters for liberty, markets, and sound money today

If you care about the Constitution, economic freedom, and keeping Washington in check, this quick explainer will help you see the FTC — and federal regulatory agencies in general — in a very different light.
