Switzerland Unemployment in December 2017: Up to 3.3 percent due to winter, seasonally adjusted unchanged at 3.0 percent

Registered unemployment in December 2017 – According to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) surveys, 146,654 unemployed people were enrolled at the Regional Employment Centers (RAV) at the end of December 2017, 9,337 more than in the previous month. The unemployment rate rose from 3.1% in November 2017 to 3.3% in the month under review. Compared to the same month of the previous year, unemployment fell by 12,718 (-8.0%).

Seasonally adjusted Unemployment Rate

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stayed unchanged at 3.0%.

Number of unemployed and Job seekers

Youth unemployment in December 2017
Youth unemployment (15 to 24 years old) increased by 110 persons (+ 0.7%) to 16,680. Compared to the same month last year, this represents a decrease of 2’536 persons (-13, 2%).

Unemployed 50 and more in December 2017
The number of unemployed 50 and more increased by 2’716 persons (+ 7.4%) to 39’306. In comparison with the previous year, this corresponds to a decrease of 1,353 persons (-3.3%).

Job seekers in December 2017
A total of 212,018 jobseekers were registered, 7,877 more than in the previous month. Compared to the same period last year, this number fell by 11,395 (-5.1%).

Notified vacancies in December 2017
The number of vacancies reported to RAV decreased by 1’290 to 10’704.

Billed short-time work in October 2017
In October 2017, 1,699 people were affected by short-time work, 285 more (+ 20.2%) than in the previous month. The number of companies affected increased by 5 units (+ 2.9%) to 176. The number of lost working hours increased by 27,281 (+ 31.2%) to 114,679 hours. In the same period of the previous year (October 2016), 372,500 hours of outage were registered, which had spread to 6,459 people in 586 companies.

Deductions in October 2017
According to preliminary figures from unemployment insurance funds, the number of persons who had exhausted their right to unemployment benefit during the month of October 2017 amounted to 2’474 persons.
