The new 50 franc note, launched last year, was voted the best new bank note in 2016 by the International Bank Note Society, a society founded in 1961.
Nearly 120 new banknotes were released worldwide in 2016. The Swiss 50 only narrowly beat the Maldive Islands 1000 Rufiyaa bill, Argentina’s 500 Peso jaguar, and the Royal Bank of Scotland’s 5 Pound first polymer note.
In addition to its good looks, the Swiss 50 is likely to hold more of its value than all of the other front runners. Over the last 12 months inflation was 2.2% (Feb 2017) in the Maldives, 2.3% (Mar 2017) in the UK, and a whopping 40.5% (Apr 2016) in Argentina. Meanwhile in Switzerland inflation was a lowly 0.6% (Mar 2017).
On 17 May this year Switzerland will launch a new 20 franc note. This will be followed by the 10 in autumn 2017 and then the 100, 200 and 1,000 francs notes between now and 2019.
Soon Swiss will need wallets where the money goes on the outside.
