Swisscom’s fixed line (remember those) customers will be given the option of blocking unwanted calls from 28 November. The service will be free and can be activated by checking a box online or by calling the Swisscom hotline (0800 800 800). Sunrise and UPC are expected to follow Swisscom by mid 2017, according to 24 Heures.
The new system automatically filters out unwanted sales calls. There is a catch however. It will also filter out anonymous and unidentifiable calls. Most of the time this is desirable, but some of the time it isn’t. If someone using a service, such as Skype, calls your phone, and they haven’t set up caller identification, then the call won’t come through. If you receive a lot of these calls, then there is another option allowing you to create phone number block lists of a total of 200 numbers, an increase from the current 50.
“Action against unsolicited calls has been our customers’ top request for some time now” said Dirk Wierzbitzki, from Swisscom. “Now, the Swisscom call filter offers an effective solution” A single click in the customer centre or a call to the hotline is all it takes to activate the free filter. The only requirement is an IP-based fixed network connection.
Around 600,000 sales calls travel across Swisscom’s fixed network every day, 10% to 20% of daily calls. Swiss consumer protection advocates want to see protection for both fixed and mobile calls. Speaking to 24 Heures, Christian Neuhaus said: “Right now, no mobile solution like this exists, but we are looking into it”.
