US-Canada relations are strained. Many in the US believe Canada isn’t doing enough to choke off illegal immigration or to protect our shared security interests in the Arctic. As Pippa Malmgren once said here on Global Macro Update, we are in a “hot war in cold places.” One of those places is the Arctic, which is rich in oil and mineral resources, including rare earths. It also offers critical alternative shipping routes, which China would like to dominate. Canada lacks the military capacity to protect all this from Russian and Chinese interests. Internally, Canada’s government is under pressure. Members of Prime Minister Trudeau’s own party are telling him to step down. Canada’s national debt has roughly doubled since he became PM in 2015. And the nation is suffering from many of the same ills afflicting the US—a fentanyl crisis, exploding homelessness, and sky-high housing prices. Adding to the pressure is Trudeau’s frosty relationship with President-elect Trump and his threat of a 25% tariff on Canadian imports to the US. These are some of the topics we’re covering in our conversation today with Canadian journalist, television producer, documentary filmmaker, and longtime friend Jonathan Roth. Puting base up there would be a DISASTER for the biodiversity land mass of Canada. Hydrocarbon energy is soon going to be replaced ….and NOT with batteries and electricity.

Trudeau is DONE. He and his cabinet are going to be imprisoned and sentenced to the gallows. There will be an election January and that crew of fake Canadians will be gone.

Lyin Brian was the least popular p.m. The party was decimated. He blamed The one and only female prime minister Kim Campbellfor the decimation. This, too, was a false statement.

Facts are important, for example this journalist saying that hard drugs are legal is so wrong. 2.5g of hard drug possession has been decrimalized. There is a difference.

Canada doesn’t have the military capability to protect us from Americans stealing our resources, never mind Russia. The guest rightly pointed out the dispute in the Beaufort Sea is between Canada and the USA. Why even bother fear mongering us about Russia, they have their own resources to defend and develop, they don’t need ours.
The USA recently made a huge continental shelf claim, which extends greatly into Canada’s claim in that area, and it’s clear that they intend to stop Canada from exploiting those resources.
Looks like a nasty little thing called Manifest Destiny is rearing its ugly head.

Oh man after reading the comments i realize more than ever how doomed Canada really is. I predict we have maybe ten years before the breakup starts. Alberta and Saskatchewan will go first as those transfer payments never come back. Quebec has always wanted out so don't let the door hit you on the way out. It is very sad really, but i told all my friends not to vote for Trudeau, but they wouldn't listen.

Calling the NDP left wing socialists is absurd! No one in Canada even remembers what 'socialist' means! But aside from that, as much as I dislike Mr. Trudeau, Ms. Freeland is worse. It is on her advice and influence over Trudeau's government policies that Canada has become a neo-con puppet of USA. The sooner she is out of any position of power in Canada the better! What we need is a strong leader who will stand up to America, and make sure military spending will be effective in safeguarding Canada from USA financial and military bullying!

So when Trudeau is gone and Poliviere comes in Trump will have a hard time whining…but he will cause that’s all he can do is grift! Go ahead end free trade and we can stop deflating our dollar and push the resources. It’s called export tariff’s. Trump is a criminal Russian sympathizer and can kiss my maple butt!

As a liberal in very conservative Alberta I am proud to have had Trudeau. He has done many good things this guy has skipped over. During Covid he did the best of all countries keeping people funded. And we have the same population as California. Trump has always been ego jealous of Trudeau. The arctic is a great concern. Trudeau has lead us very well.

The Canadian provinces should absolutely join the Union and become States, one by one. This isn't about healthcare or gun rights, etc. It's about regional strategic security to ensure strong development of the north and control of the northwest passage for mutual shipping and commerce for everyone. Unfortunately, Canada has reached a point of no return, and no policy from a repressive socialist gov't in Ottawa can recover it. Only a massive USD bailout and annexation would put them back on course and recovery for future prosperity and the advancement of Liberty for everyone. Imagine how powerful the US military will be when both are fully integrated.

Prime Minister Harper before Trudeau got in power took Arctic security seriously. The Liberals didn't so much.
